A Mexican court has handed down a 20-year prison sentence on a female individual for her involvement in the April 2024 deaths of a pair of Aussie surfers and an US national at a well-known wave-riding location in the Baja region, as announced by judicial authorities.

Victims Identified

The deceased were Aussie siblings Callum and Jake Robinson, who were 30 and 33 in that order, along with Jack Carter Rhoad, a thirty-year-old US citizen.

Details of the Fatal Event

The three men had been camping in a isolated coastal area when they were killed in what investigators suspect was an attempt to take their pickup truck.

A judicial official in the city of Ensenada convicted Gisell Silva, 23, who confessed during the legal proceedings that she had initiated and participated in the theft of the visitors’ belongings, which subsequently resulted in the murder of the three surfers.

“They have good phones and quality tires” on their vehicle, the female defendant allegedly told her partners before they carried out the crime, based on proof collected in the prosecutor’s investigation.

Judicial Outcome

Silva was found culpable of crimes related to “aggravated theft”, according to the decision released in the public records of the judicial authority of the state.

Based on testimony submitted by the prosecution, Silva was the initial to interact with the foreigners and observed they had expensive items. That prompted her to encourage her boyfriend and the remaining individuals to execute the robbery.

Additional Suspects

The remaining suspects have already been detained and charged with murder, but they are being prosecuted in separate cases.

The victims were reported absent on 27 April 2024 while staying in Ensenada, where they had travelled from the US to ride waves.

Based on the investigation, the assailants “deliberately ambushed the men and shot them with firearms, taking their lives on Sunday, April 28.”

The crime provoked significant indignation and grief in their nations of origin, where an intense effort was launched in the news and on social networks.

The remains were discovered on 3 May 2024, concealed in a cliff.

Past Cases

Other foreign tourists travelling to the Mexican Pacific region had already been victims of violent acts.

In November 2015, two other Aussie wave riders, Adam Coleman and Dean Lucas, were killed and their bodies later burned while driving through the state of Sinaloa state.
