A extensive rescue and recovery mission is actively ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of missing sailboats carrying aid cargo en route from Mexico to the island of Cuba.

Maritime Search Efforts Launched

Authorities in Mexico has dispatched naval assets and search planes to find the two vessels, which were had on board no fewer than nine total crew members, per a official statement.

The ships had been scheduled to arrive in the Cuban capital on the early part of the week, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their arrival, authorities reported.

The Situation of Aid to the Island

The island nation has leaned on Mexico's over the past few weeks, as the country grapples with widespread power outages across the country.

"Both skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and the two ships are fitted with appropriate navigational gear and signalling equipment," a representative for the convoy stated.

The nine individuals on board are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their embassy officials.

"The group is collaborating completely with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.

Recent Relief Mission

Earlier in the week, the Cuban government widely celebrated and warmly received another boat that had carried 14 tonnes of donated goods to the island.

That ship, called "a modern Granma" following the name of the vessel in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the 1950s, carried solar panels, medicines, formula milk, bikes and food.

Larger Political Climate

Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led initiatives to ship essential supplies to Cuba since January, when a oil sanctions on the country began.

Global bodies have since warned of "dire" lack of essential goods, with in excess of fifty thousand surgical procedures postponed in Cuba because of electricity supply constraints.

Political measures have been ramped up in recent months, with statements from several representatives highlighting the complex nature of bilateral relations.

In response to certain statements, a high-ranking government figure insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Accounts suggest that early stages of talks commenced, although their current progress remains not publicly known.

The Mexican navy stated it was dedicated to using every available asset at its reach to find the vessels and secure the security of the people on board.

As of now, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
