Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses The Continent's True Danger: Technological Decline.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an existential threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The true danger confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

The growing disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
