A young player from Melbourne has unfortunately lost his life after being hit in the throat by a ball during a practice session earlier this week.

Medical responders were called to a sports ground in the eastern suburbs on Tuesday late afternoon, where the teenage athlete was preparing ahead of a game.

Accounts suggest he collapsed in the practice nets after the delivery impacted his throat area while he was batting.

Advanced medical and critical care paramedics administered care at the location before he was taken by road ambulance to a hospital in serious condition.

Club Statement and Cricketing Family Response

The club announced the young player's passing on Thursday, stating they were “absolutely devastated” by the tragedy.

“The effects of his passing will be experienced by all in our sports family,” the club stated in a online message.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and all who knew and cherished him.”

The announcement was rapidly flooded with condolences from the wider cricketing family.

The team also requested that the confidentiality of the young man’s loved ones be honored.

Details of the Tragedy

A sports organization president stated the teenager was warming up in the nets before a T20 match when the catastrophic incident occurred in front of his teammates.

“First aid was provided by individuals at the scene at the time until the paramedics reached the location,” he said.

The association, along with a sports governing body, continued to offer its full support to those impacted.

Accounts indicated the player had been using a helmet when the incident took place.

This tragedy comes just over a ten years after the passing of professional player Phillip Hughes, who succumbed to injuries after being struck in the throat by a short-pitched delivery during a first-class game.
