Torrential Rains Worsen Circumstances for Uprooted Residents of Gaza, Agencies Warn
Heavy rains over the last seven days have worsened the precarious situation of the hundreds of thousands of evacuated residents in the region, as reported by aid groups.
"Terrible" Conditions Creates Grave Threats
A spokesman detailed the previous night's conditions as "awful", with rain so heavy that around 15cm (6in) of water accumulated on the streets.
"The recent weather was truly terrible for the families. The downpours were so intense... And the gusts were so powerful," noted the official.
Authorities voice significant concern that young ones living in temporary structures in soaked clothing will contract hypothermia and additional illnesses.
Casualties and Extensive Damage
The health ministry have reported that one baby has passed away from the cold and no fewer than 11 other people have died in structural failures caused by the severe weather.
Further statements put a increased number of casualties. Authorities reported that numerous structures had fully given way and scores had collapsed partially.
- Almost 55,000 families affected by the weather.
- More than 40 designated shelters inundated.
- Countless residents compelled to relocate again.
Aid Distribution Considered Insufficient
Agencies have escalated distribution of tents, warm covers and garments following the halt in hostilities commenced, but they stress there is still not enough aid reaching those in need.
"Officials are working relentlessly to bring in that aid and to distribute it, but the scale of the necessities is so vast that we are faced with thousands of families and children who are truly struggling every night," cautioned one representative.
Ongoing Challenges and Agreement Plans
The next stage of the agreement includes proposals for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with post-war governance, the pullback of military forces, and other terms.
Aid organizations have highlighted the imperative for "greater and continuous humanitarian assistance to respond to urgent and future needs."
The conflict was sparked by an attack in October 2023. Following campaigns have caused a high number of fatalities in the territory, as per health ministry reports.
