The people of Israel mark two-year anniversary of October 7th attacks as Gaza peace talks proceed
Citizens have come together across the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-conducted assault on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations continued in the neighboring country over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The assault led to over 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel responded by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"Our violent adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "achieve all the aims of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed formal memorials until mid-October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but events still occurred around the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was held in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the affected families, it was aired across Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was respected throughout the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' negotiating teams gathered in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a second day of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the agreement.
A senior delegate knowledgeable about the talks indicated that an late session of indirect talks commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative said the day's discussions ended without significant progress, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the first phase of the deal.
He noted that the discussions are "tough and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but noted that mediators are making efforts to reduce the gaps between the two sides.
Critical Matters in Talks
- A permanent truce
- The exchange of the hostages still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Plans for assistance provision
- Post-war governance of the region
Citizen Feeling
In the city's public square earlier, young a woman - whose family member endured the assault on the gathering, where 378 people were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - shared: "No location feels like home now and until all the hostages are released no one will feel safe."
"When we see everybody home again, we can feel relief again. Then we can commence rebuild," she continued.
Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people assembled to express their support for the relatives of the abducted. Israel says forty-eight stay in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be living.
Demonstrator one woman explained: "It's necessary do any agreement required for the abducted to be released. But we really want promises that we will be safe."
Research now consistently show that approximately 70% of Israeli citizens prefer the conflict to finish in as payment for the release of the abducted.
Gaza Conditions
At the location of Nova festival, grieving people gathered to pay their respects.
From there, the sound of military attacks and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people indicated the severe Israeli shelling continued.
In the main city, attacks were documented in the morning of that day in the west side neighborhood, area and zone neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of that sector, as well the camp to the north-west.
"Once the evening arrives, the dread arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli bombing previously, explained.
"My family are terrified of the attacks. All the night we are sleeping together, holding each other, notably my youngest child who rests his face on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we monitor the news to see the situation. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the war will come back to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
The healthcare center in Gaza City announced it had received the bodies of six people by the afternoon, including several who died in an Israeli bombing in the south part district.
Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of the city indicated another two victims had been delivered. One of them was died by Israeli troops while seeking aid to the south region, medical staff said.
