The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"This is a unique experience where a girl harboring several human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct souls, each with their own fears and drives. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.

Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, while other scenes depict the main character navigating a desolate church.

An Environment of Personal Horror

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal within us. This game explores that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."

The core mechanic involves managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have large blooms where their heads are. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."

After a player believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The last one standing might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
