Teacher Killed and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Armed Clash at School in Nigeria
Armed assailants have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a girls' secondary school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.
The criminal group stormed the public educational institution for female students in Maga, Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on Monday, authorities reported.
The assailants "confronted officers on duty in a firefight" before climbing over the boundary wall and seizing the students from their living quarters, an official report indicated.
An educational worker was fatally shot while defending the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Observers recounted a considerable contingent of armed individuals, known locally as bandits, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to create fear.
Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the armed men then led a contingent of young women into adjacent wilderness.
The police said they had deployed "extra specialized police forces, in coordination with armed forces and community security teams" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and potential getaway paths.
In the last several years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have become frequent targets for armed groups, who often carry out abductions to seek ransom payments or gain negotiating power with authorities.
