Celebrants in traditional attire

Countless individuals of brightly clothed Ethiopians assembled in central Ethiopia's capital for the traditional Irreecha event this weekend.

This thanksgiving celebration is honored by the Oromo, the biggest community, and takes place at the conclusion of the country's primary rainy season.

Festival gathering near water

Every year, festival-goers gather around sacred rivers and lakes to give thanks to their creators for the lush vegetation that the precipitation have brought.

"I've been celebrating this celebration for the previous nine years," mentioned young adult Moata Abdulmajid.

"To me, this event embodies my cultural background, it reflects the pride and greatness of my ethnic group."

Traditional clothing and jewelry

Males, ladies, the senior citizens and the younger generation all participate, ornamented in attention-grabbing garments and jewellery.

They sing, move rhythmically, exchange narratives and deposit newly gathered grass and blossoms in water - representing existence, renewal and aspiration.

The first day of the celebration was held on recently in the main city. On the next day, participants travelled to Bishoftu, a community close to the capital.

Even though Irreecha has its foundations in indigenous faith systems, it is now practiced by the majority of the Oromo people, without consideration for their belief system.

Modern Trends

Social media at festival

In the past decade, the number of individuals attending the festival has grown significantly. This is partially because of the expansion of digital platforms, where many youth document their outfits, dancing and vocal performances during the gathering.
