Powerful Documentary on Clergy Misconduct in NOLA Wins Top Honor

A hard-hitting film exploring the widespread abuse within the church in New Orleans has lately received the honor for outstanding film at the Winter Park film festival.

Named “God As My Witness,” the documentary highlights that perpetrators of these acts are not beyond justice, while providing a platform to those affected and advocating accountability.

Showings of the feature at the gathering in the beginning of fall allegedly were fully booked, with several viewers moved to tears by the narrative.

Helmed by a New Orleans native and produced by Michael Brandner Sr, the 82-minute project draws from firsthand stories, including the discovery of correspondence sent by a religious figure accused of abuse.

The story also includes multiple survivors who endured assault while growing up in religious settings in New Orleans.

Furthermore, the film covers the court process faced by the church authority, which sought financial reorganization in recent years due to multiple allegations of misconduct.

Up until current developments, the financial proceedings is still ongoing, though over 600 of claimants are in the process of voting on a offered resolution valued at a significant amount.

The creative team accepted the award on the seventh of September. The producer stated that seeing survivors take part in the honor was deeply emotional.

“The survivors evolved from victim to a person of strength to hero,” Brandner expressed. “The moment was profoundly beautiful.”

Prior to the recent screening, the film received nominated for best feature documentary at the Raindance film festival in early summer.

It has also screened at a gathering in a foreign country, where it was permitted to be presented in a sacred setting by a religious leader.

As stated by festival organizers, the film succeeds in making a city-based story into a widely relatable theme.

Moving forward, the feature is likely scheduled to premiere at the 2025 New Orleans film festival in the fall season.

Admissions for that festival are expected to be released in mid-October.
