Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally a short while after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine saves to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at both ends of the field

Following a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defensive duties, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored just a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Tottenham box.

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.
