Laila Harbert's Path: From Arsenal's Youth System to Portland Thorns
Back in August 2023, Arsenal announced that three emerging prospects would join Watford on shared arrangements. The group featured two players named Michelle Agyemang and Katie Reid, who have since gained significant attention for impressive accomplishments and devastating injuries.
ACL Injuries and Opening Doors
Football careers often require good breaks and openings. When Leah Williamson suffered a ligament damage that sidelined her from the WSL campaign, it provided an opportunity for the young player to showcase her skills. In parallel, Russo's foot injury led to Michelle Agyemang's England call-up. Both players excelled before experiencing knee ligament tears, making their forced interruptions particularly disheartening.
The Third Talent: Laila Harbert's Journey
And then there's, the final individual from that original trio? She is called Laila Harbert, an 18-year-old midfielder who moved to Portland Thorns this summer. This is her third borrowing arrangement after earlier periods with Watford and Southampton. Harbert moved during the middle of the American league schedule to improve her skills at a higher intensity level.
“Their achievements inspire you to merit that level through persistent work,” Harbert states from her American base.
Standing By Friends During Challenges
Reflecting on the knee problems that struck her ex-colleagues Agyemang and Reid, Harbert describes herself as “heartbroken”. “It’s the kind of news you never want anyone to receive, especially about your closest friends,” she comments. “The increasing rate of ACL damage creates anxiety among players.”
Harbert emphasizes that “adjustments are required with enhanced measures to ensure athlete safety.” Harbert commits that “As soon as I’m back in England, I’ll be straight there to support them.”
Early Development: Training with Boys' Academy
Laila became part of the club's youth system at age nine and, by eleven, began training with boys. This strategy had become standard practice at the football institution.
“You're pushed to perfect tiny elements,” she describes. “Since male players typically possess more speed and power, I had to leverage my technical skills to evade confrontations where I might be disadvantaged.”
Harbert continues: “Increased speed demands improve your fast-ball movement. My progress was noticeable upon rejoining the women's setup.”
Family Sacrifices and Commitment
Laila's household made substantial concessions to support her football dreams, including relocating from south London to Hertfordshire. This deliberate relocation brought her closer to Arsenal's training facility, reducing commuting duration to enhance playing capability.
In Laila's view, this demonstrated “the commitment that the whole family had for me, a 10-year-old with a vision.”
Present Status and Coming Opportunities
Laila served as on the substitute during Portland's dramatic extended play success against San Diego Wave. This prepares an important postseason game against the capital city team.
Her loan arrangement will finish following their championship pursuit. The team desires this will conclude with lifting the trophy on the appointed day.
Long-Term Development and Patience
The English club intends to review the player's progression route after the postseason finishes. Such planning demands understanding in an increasingly professionalized WSL where chances for young players are diminishing.
“There’s no point in shying away from the fact that the average age in the WSL is about 25-26,” the midfielder comments. “At 18 you are sitting there thinking: ‘When is that going to be possible for me?’”
She emphasizes that “The main thing at my age is just to be getting senior minutes in and that senior exposure under my belt.”
Methodical Preparation and Mental Attitude
Harbert explains that her team possesses a detailed progression blueprint that goes past short-term moves. “If it’s not going to be at my parent club then they have a plan in place for me that isn’t just limited to these loans; it’s a longer-term plan that I’ve bought into and they’ve bought into.”
The midfielder elaborates: “That’s been the most important thing for me throughout, understanding that there is a bigger picture and all of these loans are done with the aim of me eventually coming back to Arsenal and then hopefully competing to start.”
Harbert concludes with individual wisdom: “Occasionally I become overly focused on results and my envisioned destination, neglecting the essential element of enjoyment.”
“My approach involves recalibrating victory through incremental growth, focusing on controllable elements, pursuing self-improvement to shape my destiny, all while savoring the experience.”
