Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such treatments should be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural support.
