American flight controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and calling in sick, as they continue to work without pay during the government shutdown, the transport chief has announced.

"The controllers are wearing thin," the official informed a news outlet on the weekend, as certain aircraft were halted on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

Following the government shut down on October 1st, flight controllers, who are considered critical staff, were told to keep doing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been absent, leading terminals to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has added to delays due to climate and other issues.

Over three thousand US flights were delayed on the weekend, and the secretary said he expects the situation to grow worse.

"I am seeing the pressure," Duffy remarked in an interview on a weekend program, noting that he had met with several controllers to hear their concerns firsthand.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I work for Uber, am I able to find an alternative of earnings to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy further mentioned that on Saturday 22 alerts at airfields said flights would be delayed due to a shortage of employees - among the peak since the shutdown started.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second most extended shutdown in history.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would reduce the quantity of aircraft in the air if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he would not answer straightforwardly when asked if it was secure to fly in the US, and instead made a direct appeal to controllers.

"I require my controllers concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at home," the official stated.

On Sunday, some planes were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, causing interruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the country and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as other flights extending upward to the metropolis of Oakland.

The FAA notice went out at 08:45 in the morning on the weekend. Numerous trips were operating normally by midday.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, however, were delayed an average of over an hour due to personnel issues, and the authority said Dallas Fort-Worth, the second-busiest airport in the US, could encounter problems from low staffing in the afternoon.

The agency warned travelers in California to consult carriers about revised flight schedules.

The issue precedes the third match of the World Series, which is due to be played in LA on Monday night, and approximately four weeks before the Thanksgiving break, among the peak periods to travel by air in the US.

Strain on US air travel contributed to ending a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the shutdown had reached its fifth week and disrupted flight services, including pilot training.

It prompted several air traffic controllers to stay home on the identical date on 25 January 2019, briefly halting travel at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

On that date, Donald Trump, who at the period was in his initial presidency as leader, agreed to sign a temporary funding measure, effectively ending the federal closure after 35 days.
