Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Become a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.

A recent acronym came to light a few months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is unique to Gaza, as stated by doctors such as child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for doctors to care for a child who has seen the death of their entire family. However, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of young amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal about many doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being systematically aimed at.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that genocidal acts are still being committed. The Israeli government rejects these claims, just as it denies each claim it is charged with. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its stated mission of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, it seems, is what global togetherness looks like.

Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from participating in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems completely different.

A Double Standard

Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

The contest turns 70 next year – nearly twice the current lifespan of a person in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. A competition that initially championed peace has now become a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
