Egyptian Foreign Minister Pressures Hamas to Agree to Trump's Gaza Peace Plan and Disarm
Egypt and Doha are actively pursuing efforts to persuade Hamas to agree to the former US president's demand to stop the war in Gaza, according to Egypt's foreign minister.
Increasing Diplomatic Pressure on Hamas
Egypt's foreign minister stated that the moment has arrived for the organization to lay down its weapons and refrain from offering Israel any pretext to persist in its offensive in Gaza, where two dozen Gazans were lost their lives on Friday.
“We must avoid providing any justification for ongoing civilian casualties, which have escalated far beyond the events of October 7th,” Abdelatty stated.
He added that Cairo is “in close contact with Qatar and Turkey to persuade Hamas to agree to the terms”.
Key Points of the Trump Proposal
The plan would demand Hamas to:
- Disarm and cease political involvement
- Hand over the captives in custody from the 2023 attack, with 20 are believed to be living
In return, Israeli authorities would:
- Pull back its military from the territory
- Succeeded by an international force
- Accept a temporary government under Trump
Most analysts concur that the initiative would effectively terminate its existence as an armed Palestinian resistance group, while the Israeli side would make few concessions.
Split Opinions within the Faction
The organization is at odds over the appropriate answer, with factions asking for a delay to consider the deal.
A senior commander has objected to the plan, seeing it as a tactic to eliminate Hamas regardless of they accept.
Sources close to the group report that the faction is expected to request changes regarding:
- Disarmament terms
- Remaining troops of Israeli forces in Gaza
- Assurances that the top officials will not be pursued
Gaza Situation Intensifies
Israel persisted in its operations in the northern area and airstrikes across the wider strip on the recent day, killing two dozen individuals.
Nearly a dozen of the casualties were in the northern city, while the others were killed in the south, including three in an aerial attack in a southern area, which had been previously designated a secure area.
Israel issued its final warning for the city on Wednesday, with the top defense official announcing that anyone remaining would be deemed affiliated with armed groups, a label that contradicts global norms.
A vast number of residents remain stranded in the urban area, many of whom who are unable to pay for the evacuation to the south, which is said to cost more than $1,000.
“Numerous civilians are stranded on roadsides, awaiting shelter,” commented an aid official.
United Nations agencies declared that there is nowhere secure for people fleeing the city, as areas designated as “safe zones” in the south are lethal.
A UNICEF spokesperson labeled the idea of secure areas as “absurd”, stating that explosives are dropped with frightening frequency and shelters used as temporary shelters are often destroyed.
Hospitals under Extreme Pressure
Medical facilities in southern Gaza are overwhelmed, with the Red Cross field hospital treating more than double its designed patient load.
Recently, a major medical facility received numerous fatalities of people fatally wounded by the Israeli military.
A senior doctor characterized the circumstances as “extremely difficult”.
Israel has been alleged to be attacking healthcare facilities and staff, with healthcare professional said to be taken while traveling to work in Khan Younis.
Authorities has asserted that detained healthcare workers had ties to Hamas, though without providing evidence.
The overall death toll from Israel’s war in Gaza has reached over 62,000 Gazans killed and about 170,000 wounded, per the Gaza health authority.
