Del Toro's Vision for Mary Shelley's Classic Preview Arrives as Wonderfully Gothic
Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein stands as a highly awaited films for the coming year. A collaboration with Netflix, his take on the classic Gothic story is a direct adaptation of Mary Shelley's 19th-century novel, Frankenstein.
With the creature (not a monster) teased on Sept. 30, the main question remained: when can we expect the film's trailer?
Surprisingly, it's available today. Unveiled on October 1st — an appropriately eerie day — the film's teaser presents how the creature is built within the scientist's lab.
It also depicts the creature awakening, causing havoc and mayhem in order to locate the scientist who forsake him.
The lives that are shattered after their encounter when brought together come into focus. Visually, it's both breathtaking and heartbreaking, hinting that it's poised to be essential viewing for film enthusiasts in the autumn season.
The Director's Perspective: More Than Scares
Del Toro has explored a variety of dark and fantastical tales for a long time.
Initially, Frankenstein certainly seems to belong in that category. But, interestingly, the director has emphasized that it shouldn't be classified as horror.
"It’s an emotional story from my perspective. It holds great personal significance. I'm exploring themes regarding fatherhood and sonhood… This isn't a scary movie — ever."
Notable Performers
With Oscar Isaac in the role portraying the ambitious scientist alongside Jacob Elordi as the creation Frankenstein brings to life, those familiar with the book are aware there is deeper meaning to this tale than cheap scares.
The story contains deep feeling, violence, along with a clear desire to be accepted and embraced. How Del Toro will capture the core of these ideas remains to be seen.

Thankfully, the wait is nearly over. Frankenstein will receive a short cinema engagement eligible for awards in select theaters beginning October 17th, prior to its Netflix debut from early November.
