Animal testing in science could be eliminated more quickly under a fresh plan to increase the use of artificial intelligence and 3D bioprinted human tissues, according to a British official.

Supporting Replacement for Animal Experiments

The strategy introduced by the science minister endorses substituting certain animal tests that are currently employed when necessary to assess the security of items such as critical immunizations and the effects pesticides have on living beings and the environment.

The roadmap states that eliminating the use of animals in research can only happen when reliable and efficient substitute approaches with the same level of safety for human exposure can take the place of them.

Financial Support and Rules

The authorities stated that new funding for researchers and simplified rules would assist in developing techniques such as miniature organ simulators – tiny devices that imitate how organs in the body work using real human cells.

Greater use of AI to examine vast amounts of information about molecules and forecast whether novel drugs will be secure and perform effectively on humans would be utilized, while bioprinted tissue structures could create realistic human tissue samples, from skin to hepatic tissue, for experimentation.

Specific Timelines

Additional measures under the initiative include an end to regulatory testing on animals to determine the likelihood for skin and eye irritation and skin allergies by the end of 2026.

By 2027, researchers are anticipated under the strategy to end tests of the potency of botulinum toxin on rodents, while by 2030 pharmacokinetic studies – which monitor how a drug travels through the system over duration – on dogs and non-human primates will be reduced.
